Electrical Safety (KC)
Korea electrical safety certificationKC Safety Certification for Electrical ProductsAnyone who manufactures electrical products subject to safety certification, manufactures them abroad for export to Korea, or imports them must obtain safety certification for each model from a safety certification body, as prescribed by ordinance of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIR). The certification body carries out product testing to confirm compliance with the safety standards and a factory audit to confirm that the manufacturer can consistently maintain product quality. It is a mandatory scheme that verifies the safety of electrical products before they leave the factory or clear customs.
Applying for Safety Certification
Apply for safety certification for each model before the product leaves the factory or clears customs. Submit the application with the documents below to a safety certification body. A foreign manufacturer may appoint a person residing in Korea as its agent to apply on its behalf.
Application Documents
- Safety certification application (Annex Form No. 4)
- Product description
- Electrical circuit diagram and parts list
- Sample of the safety certification marking
- Copy of the business registration certificate or an equivalent document (one per factory if the same product is made at two or more factories)
- Document proving the agent's authority (only if an agent applies)
- Document proving the products are identical (only if the same product is made at two or more factories)
- Samples for product testing: the product (one unit if the safety standard does not specify a quantity), any components without safety certification, and other components designated by the President of the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS)
Application Procedure
Periodic Inspection
To confirm that certified products remain safe, the certification body inspects the certified electrical products, manufacturing equipment, testing equipment, and technical capabilities once every two years. Each periodic inspection includes a factory audit and product testing. For product testing, one model that best represents each product category is sampled from the models certified at the factory audit. (Electrical Appliances and Consumer Products Safety Control Act, Article 7; Enforcement Decree of the same Act, Article 9)
Tell us the product type and model of the electrical products you plan to import, and we will check whether they need safety certification and guide you through the application.
